OPENING A BANK ACCOUNT IN AUSTRIA

According to Section 23 of the Consumer Payment Accounts Act (Verbraucherzahlungskontogesetz), every consumer legally residing in the European Union has the right to open and use a bank account with basic functions at a credit institution located in Austria, regardless of their place of residence.

Article 22 of this law specifically prohibits any form of discrimination by Austrian credit institutions against legally residing EU citizens applying for a bank account, regardless of nationality, residency, gender, age, race, skin color, ethnic or social origin, language, religion, political views, disability, or sexual orientation.

Third-country nationals need the following documents to open an account in Austria:

  • Valid passport
  • Residence permit
  • Proof of address/registration
  • Employment contract (if available)
  • Proof of income, or information on your financial status and the origin of funds you plan to transfer

However, despite these legal protections, current sanctions against the Russian Federation mean that it has become considerably more difficult for Russian citizens to open bank accounts in Austria; some banks even flatly refuse applications from Russians due to internal regulations.
